Hello Right to Read ND Advocates,
The Library Censorship Bill is headed to the Senate floor! This week, the Senate Judiciary committee gave Senate Bill 2307 a DO PASS recommendation, even with over 100 pieces of testimony submitted in opposition to the bill.
We need your voice to defeat this bill in the Senate! Please email or call your ND Senator today to ask them to vote no on SB 2307.
You can let them know that:
- It puts free speech in jeopardy.
- The vague terms in the bill open the door to removing access to books based on one particular viewpoint.
- It removes the control from our local library boards and school boards.
- It targets and prosecutes librarians and teachers.
- It could suspend access to eBooks and audiobooks through Libby and Hoopla.
Finally, we already did this! During the 2023 Legislative Session, House Bill 1205 passed both chambers, adding a clear definition of obscenity to state law. This requires that libraries don't have explicit materials in their children’s collections. Enough is enough.
Ask your ND Senator to vote no on SB 2307 and leave the parenting to parents and caregivers, not to our government. Thank you for taking action to support the right to read!
